The National Occupational Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance Workers (Wind Turbine Maintenance Technicians), led by CHN Energy Longyuan Power in its drafting, was officially issued and implemented recently with the approval of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the National Energy Administration. The release of the standard fills a gap in China’s professional standards system for wind turbine maintenance personnel and provides clear guidance for talent development and skills assessment in the wind power operation and maintenance industry.

In recent years, as large-scale offshore and onshore wind power projects have expanded rapidly and technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence monitoring have been widely adopted, the wind power operation and maintenance model has been accelerating toward digital forecasting and intelligent management. Against this backdrop, the core skill requirements for wind turbine maintenance personnel have evolved significantly, with growing emphasis on digital operations, intelligent equipment management and data analysis capabilities. Traditional skills evaluation systems have increasingly struggled to meet the practical needs of the industry.

The newly implemented standard establishes a comprehensive and professional skills evaluation framework. It creates a clear career progression pathway covering five levels, from entry-level technicians to senior technicians, while defining responsibilities and work requirements at each stage. The standard also sets out assessment requirements focused on key operational tasks such as routine equipment management, fault inspection, emergency response and intelligent system operation, while emphasizing both theoretical knowledge and practical on-site capabilities.

The introduction of this national occupational standard establishes a standardized benchmark for professionals engaged in wind turbine maintenance. It will help meet the growing demand for multidisciplinary skills driven by the ongoing transformation of wind power operation and maintenance models, while further advancing the standardization and professionalization of China’s wind turbine maintenance industry.
